Today’s denture models offer an unrivaled ability to replicate your natural teeth in look, feel and function. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you can care for them just like your natural teeth. Your dentures require a certain maintenance regime to prolong their lifespan.
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to follow when caring for your dentures:
Brushing
DO brush your dentures at least twice a day with a non-abrasive cleaner. Oxyfresh and Polident have excellent denture cleaning products, but you may also use liquid hand / dish soap.
DON’T use regular toothpaste or baking soda, as these teeth-cleaning agents are too abrasive for your dentures and may scratch and weaken them over time. In addition, the abrasions allow bacteria and stains to develop within the rough ridges and indentions of your dentures.
During the Night
DO soak your dentures during the night. Use a special soaking solution recommended by your dentist, as these will help remove plaque and stains while also disinfecting your dentures.
DON’T allow yourself to sleep in your dentures. Let your mouth rest and your dentures soak. Wearing your dentures through the night can create gum irritations, increased bacteria levels and accelerated gum shrinkage. Your dentures can even be a nighttime choking hazard!
DON’T leave your dentures on the counter during the night. Your prosthetic teeth need moisture as well as cleaning. Letting your dentures sit out while you sleep can cause them to dry out and become brittle.
Mints and Gum
DO choose the right type of gum for your dentures. Freedent is best because it won’t stick to your dental work.
DON’T suck on or chew peppermints or other hard candies, as they can damage your prosthetic teeth and cause them to fit improperly.
