Is your oral health a priority? Many people spend substantial time and money in keeping their bodies in top condition. However, they neglect to realize the important link between oral health and body health. By keeping your mouth healthy, you can protect and improve the health of other vital systems in your body – such as your heart, your brain and your blood sugar levels. Conditions like untreated gum disease has been linked to heart attack, stroke, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s. Beyond a confident smile, there are some significant reasons to maintain optimal oral health through all stages of life.
Keeping your mouth healthy is not as complicated as you may think. In fact, your dental health can be protected by following these simple ABC’s:
A- Always brush & floss twice a day. If you expect to keep your teeth and gums healthy, daily brushing and flossing is non-negotiable. It is recommended that you brush twice a day for two minutes each session. Flossing once a day can ensure you are cleaning the remaining 35% of your tooth surface! Daily cleaning at home keeps bacteria and food debris away so that plaque doesn’t accumulate and harden on your teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing is a critical weapon in preventing cavities and gum disease.
B- Be diligent about your routine dental checkups. There’s a reason why patients are asked to see their dentist twice a year. Experts agree that by attending a routine dental cleaning and exam every six months, patients can avoid costly dental issues as well as catch minor concerns at their most treatable stage. Are you diligent about keeping your hair appointment or chiropractor visits? Why not be as committed to your oral health?
C- Choose foods and drinks that promote a healthy smile. What you put in your mouth can certainly impact your stomach and your body weight. But the foods and drinks you consume on a regular basis can also have a drastic influence on the health of your teeth. Not only do your teeth and gums need certain vitamins and minerals to stay strong, but there are a number of common beverages and snacks that can ruin the health of your smile. Try to maintain a diet high in antioxidants to fight gum inflammation and rich in calcium to keep your tooth enamel as strong as possible. Stay away from hard candies that can fracture your teeth as well as foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acids.
