The temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles in the jaw are responsible for the movement required when you chew or open your mouth. When these components become damaged or stressed, they can cause pain and dysfunction. This condition is referred to as TMJ or TMD and can cause discomfort for sufferers. However, it can certainly be treated. Mitzi Morris, DMD, PC, offers effective treatments for TMJ at our office in Roswell.
Often, TMJ is caused or accentuated by dental problems. If your teeth or bite is not properly aligned, it can cause stress on the jaw joint and muscles. Missing or crooked teeth can be the reason for the misalignment of the bite, causing undue stress on the jaw. Issues like breathing through the mouth, due to sinus problems or allergies, can put extra stress on the jaw. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can be related to TMJ/TMD, this is due to the misalignment of the jaw or an aggravation of the joint when the jaw is clenched.
We look for the cause of stress on the jaw and recommend procedures to help reduce pressure. This can include orthodontic procedures, replacing missing teeth, wearing a nightguard and other options. Overall oral health can often eliminate the pain and discomfort that comes with TMJ, giving you relief.
